Dear Friends,
In this October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our campaign ‘From Pink to Prevention’ is trying to raise the level of debate about the much marginalised issue of environmental and occupational links to the disease. Sixteen campaigning organisations from England, Scotland, Germany, USA, Australia, Philippines, and several pan-EU networks have signed on to our statement which asks why, despite all the money raised, more and more of us are getting this disease?
In particular, we want to know why the breast cancer charities continue to focus solely on ‘lifestyle’ risk factors such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the potential 60% of breast cancer cases for which they have no explanation. What about the role of chemical, environmental and occupational exposures in this?
We argue that better diagnostics and treatment are not mutually exclusive with looking at how our profoundly polluted environment, homes and workplaces impact on our bodies and health – and we need action on this, if we are to heed the ‘precautionary principle’ .

Make Apartheid History (once and for all) is the follow up to Bethlehem Unwrapped and is an international project that brings together creative individuals, organisations and networks from around the world – starting with Palestine and the UK; South Africa and USA – for a programme of popular events connecting civil rights, anti-apartheid and Palestinian solidarity movements. Commencing summer 2015 and culminating summer 2016.
Following on from our first public event at London’s Southbank in July, our Make Apartheid History campaign picked up again this month by marking two moments.

The superficial speed of our 21st century life can trick us into thinking that change can happen equally fast. But does it? Drivers of change – for example, the neo-liberal project that has shaped our politics for more than four decades – move much more slowly than we might imagine, their impact deep and prolonged. And those who oppose, protest, dissent and march for rights and against injustices, often endure a long wait before seeing change. But, more often than not, change is what they see…

April sees us launch our first major Tipping Point Funding Appeal – it’s a campaign that we will run from April to June and is being done via the PATREON funding platform.
PATREON is very much about continuous support for creative projects – we are increasingly seeing our work as ‘creative activism’ and feel that this USA platform is the best place for us to showcase our work.

As we come to the end of 2014, it’s fair to say that we would have wished to see a much more peaceful and equitable year than the one we have just witnessed.
But as long as more and more people actively engage with a variety of (inter-connected) issues – realizing that if we are to make our society better, we need to come together – there is hope for change. Inequality has been successfully challenged in the past and can be again; the war machine can (and must) be resisted; our shared environment must be protected.

This film is a very personal ‘Bethlehem story’ which encompasses the history of, as well as the present-day reality for, the town of Bethlehem and its citizens as they cope with life under occupation. It is a film about family, adversity, hope and, of course, Christmas.

Autumnal greeting to all our supporters, friends and colleagues,
With the return of Occupy to London; the UK parliament’s (non-binding) vote to recognize Palestine and the thousands who marched around the world in solidarity with the people of Gaza; with hundreds of thousands of people around the world who marched for action on climate change ahead of UN Climate Summit in New York and not forgetting the Scottish referendum here at home – slowly but surely, we can take hope that tides are turning on some of the biggest issues of today and that civil society is finding its voice and its strength on many, often connected, issues.

Leila Sansour’s film Open Bethlehem was previewed to a sell-out audience of 720 at London’s Royal Geographical Society. It was an incredible evening – MPs and activists; academics and media all joined with many leading Palestinian figures and hundreds of members of the general public in giving the film and Leila, a standing ovation.

Dear Greenbelt Festival friends,
We were delighted to welcome a 3000-strong audience to our mini-Bethlehem Unwrapped Festival at Greenbelt on August 24 this year which included music, dance, spoken word, testimony, poetry and Tom Pursey’s wonderful short documentary about B/U at St James’s Piccadilly.
As part of our Bethlehem Unwrapped festival

we commissioned film-maker Tom Pursey to record all aspects of the event – from the construction (and subsequent public impact) of the 8m high life size replica WALL that was built in front of St James’s Piccadilly, through to all the live events that spanned our two week festival.
We are releasing our short film to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the declaration in 2004 by the International Court of Justice in The Hague (a UN body) that the barrier being built around the West Bank was illegal and should be pulled down.

The reception for Amir’s film about the world’s largest protest – the anti-Iraq invasion protests of 2003 – took the UK’s leading documentary festival by storm!

In beautiful surroundings of St Luke’s Church, north London, on Wednesday 4 June at 7.30pm,
90 guests joined us for the premiere of our short documentary about the Bethlehem Unwrapped festival at St James’s Church Piccadilly last Christmas. There was also an auction of the graffitied Wall panels – a historic snapshot of when the Wall came to London.

Dear friends,
After two incredible weeks, our ‘Bethlehem Unwrapped’ festival hosted by St James’s Church Piccadilly came to end on the 5th January and the replica WALL finally came down. Between December 23rd and January 5th, thousands came to see it and many came to write on it. The vast majority wrote messages of peace and solidarity while small number wrote in favour of the real separation wall. Messages were written in many languages and by British and international visitors alike.
