‘Pink’ Breast Cancer Month: Asking a Big Question that demands an answer

‘Pink’ Breast Cancer Month: Asking a Big Question that demands an answer

Dear Friends,

pink blindfoldIn this October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our campaign ‘From Pink to Prevention’ is trying to raise the level of debate about the much marginalised issue of environmental and occupational links to the disease. Sixteen campaigning organisations from England, Scotland, Germany, USA, Australia, Philippines, and several pan-EU networks have signed on to our statement which asks why, despite all the money raised, more and more of us are getting this disease?

In particular, we want to know why the breast cancer charities continue to focus solely on ‘lifestyle’ risk factors such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the potential 60% of breast cancer cases for which they have no explanation.  What about the role of chemical, environmental and occupational exposures in this?

We argue that better diagnostics and treatment are  not mutually exclusive with looking at how our profoundly polluted environment, homes and workplaces impact on our bodies and health – and we need action on this, if we are to heed  the ‘precautionary principle’ .

JOIN US! Events In May & June…

Dear friends, colleagues, supporters,

As we emerge from the General Election, with much analysis undertaken and much more yet to come, it may be quite some time before the deeper meaning and consequences of the 2015 Election become apparent. The superficial speed of our 21st century life can trick us into thinking that change can happen equally fast. But does it? Drivers of change – for example, the neo-liberal project that has shaped our politics for more than four decades – move much more slowly than we might imagine, their impact deep and prolonged. And those who oppose, protest, dissent and march for rights and against injustices, often endure a long wait before seeing change. But, more often than not, change is what they see…

From Pink to Prevention – asking Big Questions about Breast Cancer

Dear friends, supporters, colleagues,

From Pink to Prevention –a new campaign

Save the Date for our first campaign meeting on Tuesday 27th January 6.30pm – more details at end of page

Big QuestionWelcome to our new campaign: From Pink to Prevention. We want to:-

  • put the questions out there about environmental and occupational links to breast cancer.
  • offer up some answers as to WHY primary prevention is persistently ignored.
  • make the barriers to primary prevention widely known.
  • focus on the vested interests barrier and share that information with the public, media, sister campaign groups, politicians and policy-makers.
  • identify some key ‘vested interests’ and view their real and potential impact on breast cancer policy, from government through to cancer establishment.
  • provide readily accessible and thoroughly referenced information for the general public.
  • offer simple but innovative actions that can be taken to bring about positive change.

Festive Greetings from TPFF!

Festive Greetings from TPFF!

Dear friends, supporters & colleagues,

As we come to the end of 2014, it’s fair to say that we would have wished to see a much more peaceful and equitable year than the one we have just witnessed.

But as long as more and more people actively engage with a variety of (inter-connected) issues – realizing that if we are to make our society better, we need to come together – there is hope for change. Inequality has been successfully challenged in the past and can be again; the war machine can (and must) be resisted; our shared environment must be protected.

Guardian Review: Why ‘Open Bethlehem’ is the one film you should see this week

Guardian Review: Why ‘Open Bethlehem’ is the one film you should see this week

Dear Friends,

The cinema release of Open Bethlehem will kickstart tomorrow December 5th at Genesis Cinema in London. The full listing of screenings in December can be found here. Book your tickets now to watch the Guardian’s ‘must-see film’ of the week:

“Leila Sansour’s documentary Open Bethlehem follows her campaign to stop occupying Israeli forces encircling her hometown with a concrete wall. Sansour’s film, which follows her attempts to unite Christians, Muslims and Jews in their desire for free access to the Holy City, is the kind of art that peace processes are built on.”      Peter Bradshaw

An authentic Christmas film in cinemas this December

An authentic Christmas film in cinemas this December

Dear Friends,

Open Bethlehem UK cinema release December 2014
(Apologies for any cross posting!)

This film is a very personal ‘Bethlehem story’ which encompasses the history of, as well as the present-day reality for, the town of Bethlehem and its citizens as they cope with life under occupation. It is a film about family, adversity, hope and, of course, Christmas.

So, if you want to see an authentic Christmas film this year, Open Bethlehem (trailer) is for you.

“One of the most remarkable and moving documentaries I have seen. The tragedy
of the Palestinians encapsulated in the life of one town, Bethlehem”  Jon Snow

Picturehouse cinemas will be screening Leila Sansour’s film Open Bethlehem across the UK, beginning on December 5th. To book, select your cinema here.

AUTUMN GREETINGS Round-up and plans for coming months…

AUTUMN GREETINGS Round-up and plans for coming months…

Autumnal greeting to all our supporters, friends and colleagues,

With the return of Occupy to London; the UK parliament’s (non-binding) vote to recognize Palestine and the thousands who marched around the world in solidarity with the people of Gaza; with hundreds of thousands of people around the world who marched for action on climate change ahead of UN Climate Summit in New York and not forgetting the Scottish referendum here at home – slowly but surely, we can take hope that tides are turning on some of the biggest issues of today and that civil society is finding its voice and its strength on many, often connected, issues.

On which note, here’s a quick round-up of Tipping Point’s projects.

10 years on – the illegal Wall: Share our film

10 years since the Wall was declared illegal.

As part of our Bethlehem Unwrapped festival
https://tippingpointnorthsouth.org/2014/01/06/bethlehem-unwrapped-wall-comes-down-photos-videos/
we commissioned film-maker Tom Pursey to record all aspects of the event – from the construction (and subsequent public impact) of the 8m high life size replica WALL that was built in front of St James’s Piccadilly, through to all the live events that spanned our two week festival.

We are releasing our short film to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the declaration in 2004 by the International Court of Justice in The Hague (a UN body) that the barrier being built around the West Bank was illegal and should be pulled down.

We hope you enjoy the film – do feel free to share the link

“Bethlehem Unwrapped” WALL comes down – photos & videos

“Bethlehem Unwrapped” WALL comes down – photos & videos

Dear friends,

After two incredible weeks, our ‘Bethlehem Unwrapped’ festival hosted by St James’s Church Piccadilly came to end on the 5th January and the replica WALL finally came down. Between December 23rd and January 5th, thousands came to see it and many came to write on it. The vast majority wrote messages of peace and solidarity while small number wrote in favour of the real separation wall. Messages were written in many languages and by British and international visitors alike.
