It seems impossible until it’s done

Speaking of struggles and wins, Nelson Mandela once said ‘It seems impossible until it’s done’. And as Martin Luther King pointed out, power doesn’t surrender itself – it has to be taken.

We know, in history, so many struggles have taken decades to reach their goal. But, for all that, wins do come.

We want excessive, runaway military spending to be put in this same spotlight. We need a major civil society effort to address this tough issue – with all its vested interests – head on.

Joe Glenton on Remembrace Day

British conscientious objector Joe Glenton was a British soldier for 5 years and served in Afghanistan. Refusing a second tour, he went AWOL and left the country, but returned voluntarily to fight his court martial and campaign against British military involvement in Afghanistan. Glenton was sentenced to 9 months imprisonment in 2010 and has subsequently written the book Soldier Box: Why I Won’t Return to the War on Terror. He campaigns as part of the Veterans for Peace movement, as well as regularly contributing articles to the Guardian and Independent.
